The Monday Treat – Greek Salad Puff Pastry Tart

Greek salad tart illustration for savoury pastry recipe

I’m through with winter. I know. There’s months of it to go, and I should suck it up and make the best of it with hearty stews, warming soups, sticky puddings and other seasonal deliciousness, and I will, but for now, I’m sticking two fingers up to the weather and the cold.

I’m living, blissfully, in denial. (Which, being in Egypt, is lovely and warm) Continue reading

This Dinner Will Get You Laid – Coq au Vin, for when it’s really time to impress

Coq Au Vin recipe for a snowy weekend

A combination of snow, work and being high as an escaped helium balloon on love has meant that Amazing Grace has been rather busy of late, so it was good to meet her for a 2 fingers up to the freezing weather lunch of cold sushi and hot gossip.

Here are some things I learned: Continue reading

The Wednesday Tipple – Frozen Hot Chocolate with Hot Chocolate, Frozen.

Frozen hot chocolate for a snow day recipe

It’s snowing. Evidently by morning Manhattan will be under a thick white blanket. Which might well mean a snow day if I didn’t work from home already, and if Jon didn’t live so close to his office that we can steal the wi-fi.

But the fact remains; there is snow, therefore there should be hot chocolate. Continue reading

The Monday Treat: Blackberry and Apple Crumble for a snow day

Blackberries for blackberry apple crumble

Winter is upon us. Not Christmas. Not New Year. But Winter, grinding away the days. There was more snow this week, and more predicted for next week. It’s cold outside, baby, and all I want to do is curl up on the sofa in a blanket and watch the world go by. Continue reading

Romantic Arabian nights dinner to celebrate epiphany

“It may well have been the most depressing day of my entire life,” said the woman to her friend sitting next to me while water bubbled around our feet and manicurists took up their pumice stones and files with sadomasochistic glints in their eyes. Continue reading

This Dinner Will Get you Laid – Sailing into Manhattan

Manhattan and a Manhattan cocktail for New Year's EveI left Manhattan in the cold – the kind of cold where the wind is gritted with ice as it roars down the avenues. But I’ve returned to New York in the snow, smothered under drifts of white, so I had to stump to the bar in my boots to meet my friend Bob the costume guy, whom I found in reflective mood.

“This used to be a sailor’s bar” he told me as we took our drinks to a table tucked away in the corner in the warm. Continue reading

Perfect New Year’s Eve Dinner for 2

Champagne Burst for New Year's Eve

Last New Year’s Eve, Jon and I were jet lagged and tired and in no mood to go out. We drank a great bottle of red wine, ate steak and napped in from of a movie, before making hot chocolate and taking up onto the roof to watch the fireworks from Central Park.

Given that we are flying in from London on precisely the same schedule, odds are, this is the New Years Eve dinner that we will have once again. Continue reading

The Wednesday Tipple – Champagne

Champagne photo and cork illustration for New Year's Eve champagne advice by Sarah Knowles

Today is my Mum’s birthday and we’re going to Covent Garden to watch the ballet and drink champagne. It’s become something of a family tradition of late – in fact, on the basis that anything you do twice at Christmas can claim to be a tradition, this can claim to be a long-standing one.

My sister, Sarah, who’s the wine expert of the family (by profession – she’s a wine buyer for Amathus Drinks in London) sent me a box of prosecco shortly after I moved to New York, with a note;

“Having a bottle of sparkling wine in the fridge at all times is a life choice – it means you always expect to have something to celebrate.”

Could there be a better philosophy to consider as we head into the New Year?

I leave you in Sarah’s capable hands.
